The Daily Brief

Ashby Monk

This just in:

  • An Abu Dhabi SWF is reportedly backing Richard Branson’s purchase of Northern Rock.
  • China’s State Owned Investment Vehicle (CIC) buys China’s State Owned Bank shares (CCB).
  • White knight alert: Kuwait raises the prospect of investing in the EFSF.
  • Mumtalakat’s portfolio company McLaren is building street legal cars that will cost $270k and be awesome. To truly understand the academic implications of this development, I’ll need Mumtalakat to send me a loaner.
  • CalPERS is (finally) getting serious about compliance, controls and operational risks; it’s hiring a new four-person team.
  • The Caisse de Dépôt du Québec is buying 16% of a pipeline for $850 million that transports 2.3 million barrels per day 800+ kilometers.
  • The Russia Direct Investment Fund is ALL about building legitimacy for the country’s private equity industry.
  • And here’s an interesting academic paper that proves the obvious: You should not invest with hedge funds that lie about stuff.
