Airplane Reading

Ashby Monk

I’m off to the Africa Sovereign Funds Roundtable in Casablanca tomorrow for a week. The event should be a lot of fun and very informative (speakers include Tony Blair and Mark Mobius). If you’re attending, don’t hesitate to introduce yourself to me. I’m always happy to connect with the people who actually read the stuff I put up on this blog.

This conference means that I’ll be spending the better part of two days on a plane, as I make my way from San Francisco to Casa via Paris. So I need some good reading material. As such, I’ve gone out and found several new SWF papers that I thought I’d share in case you too will be spending your weekend in the air. Here they are:

Michael Fini’s paper “Financial Ideas, Political Constraints: Sovereign Wealth Funds and Domestic Governance” in Competition & Change.

Jean-Marc F. Blanchard’s paper “China’s Grand Strategy and Money Muscle: The Potentialities and Pratfalls of China’s Sovereign Wealth Fund and Renminbi Policies” in the Chinese Journal of International Politics.

Fabio Bertoni and Stefano Lugo’s “Sovereign Wealth Fund Investments: A Credit Risk Perspective” over on SSRN.

Pascale Massot’s paper “Chinese State Investments in Canada: Lessons from the Potash Saga” in Canada Asia Agenda.

And, finally, if you’ve already read the SkyMall catalogue twice, stared longingly at all the maps in the inflight magazine and have played so many videogames that your iPhone is dead, then you can always read my new paper with Gordon entitled “Modernity, Institutional Innovation, and the Adoption of Sovereign Wealth Funds in the Gulf States.”
